Welcome to the Double O Farms

The Double O Farms Cowshare Program welcomes you to its website.  Farmer Gary and all the girls in the barnyard are so glad you came for a visit.  Take time to visit the photo gallery to meet some of the ladies that produce what many refer to as our white gold.

Gary Oaks and his wife, Dawn, began the cowshare program in October of 2004.  At its start, the program had approximately 45 private owners.  Over the years the number of families that have partnered with us has continued to grow.

God promised his people that He would lead them to a land flowing with milk and honey.  Our God is a good God and would only desire the best for His Children.  The Double O Farms believes in the superior nutritional value of milk the way God created it to be.

The Double O Farms is committed to a providing your cows a diet free of growth hormones, production hormones, and steroids.  Antibiotics are only used as a last resort and for lifesaving purposes.

Raw Milk Movement Marches On

Prior to the industrialization of our nation, families consumed milk directly from their cow and would also be free to sell any excess milk or milk-derived products to neighbors and city folk. Today, this milk is no longer simply called milk, but must be specifically referred to as “Raw Milk”.  This is to denote to the general public that it is still in its raw state – not refined by the commercial dairy industry that has so highly received the mark of excellence by the FDA.

When the industrialization and commercialization of our nation erupted, normal family dairy practices were replaced on the mass production scale to meet the needs of larger populations in cities. These practices veered away from the normal diet that cows were created to eat and hygiene practices were less than ideal as was also seen in many factories and sweatshops of that time. The milk produced in this fashion was not the pure, nutrient dense Real Milk that had once come from the family farm. Much more information on the commercialization of the dairy industry can be found in Dr. Ron Schmid’s book, The Untold Story of Milk

During the last quarter century and more specifically in the last decade in the United States, more and more people are becoming concerned with the quality and safety of their food from main stream food sources. They are beginning to question why the food purchased directly from the farmer can not be of as high, if not higher, quality than that produced by the commercial food industry. This same trend has been seen in the incredible growth of the organic food market.

Unfortunately, rather than hearing the outcry of the people, state and federal government agencies have remained stolid in their ban of milk produced from the local farmer for direct availability to the consumer. They stand under the premise from the FDA that there are inherent dangers in milk that has not been homogenized and pasteurized; thus producing a major public health threat.  However, the epidemiological data does not support the continuance of such a stance.

The voices of the people must be heard.  There are too few raw milk farmers to make a difference at our State Capitols.  The masses of people that desire freedom in selecting the best foods for their families must speak out. You are encouraged to do so by writing your legislature, becoming familiar with those on your State Agriculture Committees, becoming educated about your state’s current legislation regarding raw milk and other proposed legislation that will affect your farmer.

Weston A. Price Foundation

The Weston A. Price Foundation is the largest grass roots supporter of the Real Milk community in the US and internationally. In most countries, the Foundation helps to sponsor and support new research into nutrient dense foods.  In the US, it has been integral in fighting the battle for Real Milk as it rages on – a battle that does not exist in most modern countries around the world. The Weston A. Price’s website is also a wonderful resource of information for those that want the latest news on the legal standing of raw milk in their own state.

Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund

The Farm to Consumer Legal defense Fund was started by the Weston A. Price Foundation in response to the incredible attacks upon raw milk farmers in the US in the recent years. Fashioned after the highly successful Home School Legal Defense Fund, the Farm to Consumer Fund aids member farmers and those families that support and work with these farmers. In the event that legal action is brought against a raw milk farmer or cowshare program, this fund will provide legal support in combating the charges. We encourage all those that consume raw milk or that value the freedom of choice in selecting the best foods for their family to support this organization. Most laws in our land are not born from letter writing campaigns, stand-ins, or grass root efforts, although these are helpful; but rather on case law precedents.  It is imperative that we all help to support the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund in creating favorable case law precedents to win the war for Real Milk.

Community Farm Alliance

For those that reside in Kentucky, the Community Farm Alliance has been a great friend of the family farm.  They have partnered with family dairies in the fight for Raw Milk Legislation. Most recently, they have been quite active and successful in protecting farmers from proposed legislation related to the National Animal Identification System (NAIS).  If you are a Kentucky resident or a family that supports a Kentucky farmer, please voice your support for the Community Farm Alliance. Check out their website for ways of becoming involved and on how to make a difference for future generations that will also benefit from a close relationship with farm families.
